Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lecter in films may have helped make the cannibal a cult classic. Unfortunately, Mads Mikkelsen's portrayal in the TV series (a prequel to the original "Hannibal" trilogy) was not as much of a big hit.
"Hannibal" may already be onto its third season, but that's about it. Variety reported that after its 13-episode run wraps up on August 27, the rest of the cast and crew will say goodbye to the series, as confirmed by NBC via a statement.
Despite its good reviews and solid writing, Deadline noted that its third season has given not so favorable ratings, logging at 0.5 Live + Same day viewings from adults aged 18 - 49, which meant that the first two episodes only managed to scrape an average of 1.65 million viewers overall. While it has done well on social media and has a solid band of followers, they were not enough to hold the show for another season.
The series, which aired in 2013, was created by Bryan Fuller and stars Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne, Caroline Dhavernas, Gillian Anderson, and Mads Mikkelsen as the titular character.
Fuller said about the cancellation: "'Hannibal' is finishing his last course at NBC's table this summer, but a hungry cannibal can always dine again. And personally, I look forward to my next meal with NBC."
While Fuller could be teasing fans of the series, E! News noted that despite NBC's cancellation of the show, other networks might be interested to pick up the show and could continue its story somewhere else. Not only that, there are also rumors running around that Fuller's version may be turned into a movie as well.
The De Laurentiis Company, which produces "Hannibal," sent a series of tweets that could mean there's hope for fans. The company wrote on the microblogging site, "Gang, #Hannibal cancellation rumor is true. Important things to keep in mind: First, the remaining 10 episodes of S3 will air & are amazing!"
The rest of the tweets read, "Second, we are exploring other options for future seasons. Third, we are incredibly grateful for the amazing support and partnership with NBC. We made three rewarding seasons together. We hope to bring you future seasons. Let's focus on the amazing #Fannibal family we have formed, and move forward together! #Hannibal"
"Hannibal" will finish off the rest of the season in its usual timeslot at 10 p.m. every Thursday night on NBC.
