The annual event Frostivus for the popular Defense of the Ancients 2 has been cancelled for the second straight year, making the event's cancellation a holiday tradition at this point. News of the event's cancellation was confirmed on the official webpage for Frostivus 2013:

"By decree of the only king that matters Frostivus is cancelled,"

This refers to the character Skeleton King, which was rumored to play a big part in the event as it went on. The character has now been removed from the game "for pressing ceremonial reasons."

In addition, the Skeleton King icon on the Frostivus page has been removed. The character can still be seen in the Hero library in the game, but is not available for use within the actual game. Others are claiming that the message refers to the Wraith King, which is a character that has long been rumored to be included in the game at some point. While rumors persist that the Wraith King may replace Skeleton King in the game, there's been no official word on the characters, or further explanation for the sudden cancellation of the event .

While Frostivus may be cancelled again, Defense of the Ancients 2 (commonly shortened to DOTA 2) may have a new event to replace Frostivus. For example, when the 2012 edition of the event was cancelled, it was replaced by The Greeviling. Now that Valve has cancelled the event, it is unclear what sort of special content the company is planning for December. What is certain is that Frostivus will now become an inside joke for DOTA 2 fans. The event has not actually managed to run its course, but instead gets cancelled every year. Perhaps Valve will get their act together in time for Frostivus 2014 next year.

DOTA 2 is one of the most popular games available on Steam, the digital distribution service created by Valve. The series began life as a mod for Warcraft 3 before becoming so popular that the sequel was made and Valve officially got involved with the series. The game is one of the most popular MOBA games of all time, and is one of the biggest titles played in eSports tournaments worldwide. In fact, professional DOTA 2 players can win thousands of dollars a year placing in tournaments held all over the world.
