The Elder Scrolls Online is the biggest new MMORPG coming to gamers in 2014, and the game now has a release date for one of the platforms it will be appearing on. The PC will get first crack at the game on April 4, 2014, according to IGN.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of the game are expected in June 2014, though no specific date was mentioned for the console version of the game.

The game has long been the subject of rumor and speculation, and many rounds of closed betas and demos have shown the amount of work that Bethesda has put into the game. The Elder Scrolls Online will be similar to the single player entries in the series, except the MMORPG will allow millions to explore many different regions found in the series. Examples include areas from The Elder Scrolls 3-5, including the realm of Skyrim from The Elder Scrolls 5. Being able to return to these areas and explore the various nooks and crannies again will be a delight for fans of the series.

While the game is anticipated by a huge legion of fans, some are concerned about how the game will play on consoles, and if an MMORPG can function using a controller instead of a keyboard. Still others worry that The Elder Scrolls Online will lose the feeling of a game in the series due to the shift in genre. Matt Firor, executive producer for the game for parent company ZeniMax, spoke early on about how the development team is committed to ensure The Elder Scrolls Online functions on consoles and is an excellent representative both for the series and the genre:

"We definitely wanted to make the game very accessible to Elder Scrolls (RPG) players, and make sure that ESO doesn't hit you with too much jargon, interface, or options in the beginning...Experienced MMO players will find most of the gameplay they are used to, but it is definitely filtered through an Elder Scrolls-type interface and experience. And yes, the more that the game feels like Elder Scrolls, the better we've reached our goal."

In any case, The Elder Scrolls Online seeks to revitalize the genre and stand out among the wave of free to play MMORPGs as well as console versions of popular MMO's such as Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn when it is released in 2014.
