An adaptation of Neil Gaiman's contemporary fantasy novel, "American Gods," will be making its way to the small screen.
Starz has greenlighted the adaptation from producers Bryan Fuller and Michael Green. The author himself will also be co-producing the series.
While fans of Gaiman are excited for the adaptation, production date is yet to be announced as it will be dependent of the casting of Shadow Moon, the ex-convict who found himself entangled in the war between the traditional gods from mythologies, and the contemporary deities.
In a statement released by Starz, Gaiman said that he's "thrilled, scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation."
"I'm relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands. Now we finally move to the exciting business that fans have been doing for the last dozen years: casting our Shadow, our Wednesday, our Laura," added Gaiman.
Starz will be in charge of TV and SVOD rights, but Fremantle Media will have international distribution rights to the multi-awarded novel.
Fuller and Green also expressed their excitement for the new project. "Almost 15 years ago, Neil Gaiman filled a toy box with gods and magic, and we are thrilled to finally crack it open and play. We're grateful to have Starz above us and FremantleMedia at our backs as we appease the gods, American or otherwise."
Possible challenges
Gaiman's book called for a diverse cast. As Entertainment Weekly listed, the key cast members are Egyptian, Russian, Irish, Norse, Indian, Algonquian, and African.
Speaking to Den of Geek, Fuller provided a few hints on the production team's ideal casting. He said, "we're imagining two white roles and everybody else is non-white, so my goal, Michael's goal, certainly Neil's goal has been to have a very ethnically diverse cast. That's important to all of us."
While fans already have a cast wish list, the showrunners have already set their eyes on a particular actor. The role in which the mystery star will be playing, if all goes according to plan, has not been confirmed, although Fuller did say, "We have several people lined up that we would love to get in various roles and plan on making approaches."
As for the series timeline? Fuller mentioned something about that as well, and here's the good news: Now that the series is good to go, the production is expected to begin by early 2016 with a premiere date later in the same year.
