The Brits are now betting on 'Homeland' star Damian Lewis to replace Daniel Craig as the star in the classic superspy franchise "James Bond."

According to Telegraph UK, bookmarker William Hill slashed the odds of Lewis' chance on being the next superspy from being a stranger 25/1 to a near-favorite 3/1, leaving him currently the second favorite to play the role.

"This is an unprecedented gamble, as for no apparent reason we have seen bets of up to £200 on Damian Lewis being named as the next Bond. This might well be significant," Rupert Adams, spokesperson for William Hill, explained on Monday.

This puts the "Homeland" star ahead of other contenders, including Tom Hardy, who is at 4/1; Henry Cavill, at 5/1 and Michael Fassbender, at 7/1. So far as William Hill bets are concerned, Idris Elba is the crowd-favorite with 5/2.

Meanwhile, Betfair echoes William Hill's decision after they received massive amounts of bets for Lewis over the weekend.

"Damian Lewis hadn't seen any interest in the betting until this weekend, but an absolute landslide in bets has forced us to cut the odds," the bookmarker revealed.

Telegraph UK reported how Paddy Power also put the actor in a good position at 5/2 from 20/1 after they received a landslide of bets for him.

"As the spectre of Daniel Craig disappears into the distance, it looks as though Lewis will be the next man with the golden gun," Paddy Power noted.

Rumors of Lewis becoming the next Agent 007 became even louder after Telegraph UK showed how James Bond films producer, Barbara Broccoli, became a fan of the actor following their project together in the 2014 film "The Silent Storm."

The report revealed how Broccoli put extra effort in making Lewis comfortable on set. Quoting his recollection of the producer's manner of caring for him, Lewis said: "She overheard me say my pillow was like a brick and she arrived in her car from London with two duck-down pillows from John Lewis."

Despite this, not everyone is betting for Lewis to play the role especially after he grew his mustache.

According to Mirror UK, Lewis may not be the best choice to play the protagonist of the spy flick because he "conjures up images of a villain rather than the ruthless British spy."

This was after the 44-year-old English actor flaunted his fully grown facial hair, which he matched with a top hat and suit during the annual Royal Ascot with his wife, Helen McCrory, on Tuesday.
