The Sacramento Kings and the Toronto Raptors completed a big seven-player deal on Monday, but the two teams are reportedly not yet done dealing until the trade deadline.
ESPN reported that the Kings, who acquired Rudy Gay from the Raptors, will remain aggressive on the trade market until the Feb. 20 deadline in hopes of reshaping the roster further to improve their chances.
Aside from Gay, the Kings also acquired former No.2 NBA Draft pick Derrick Williams in a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves last month.
The arrival of Williams and Gay reportedly made power forward Jason Thompson an expendable asset, but his contract could discourage teams from acquiring the power forward, who is still under contract in the next four years.
The 27-year-old forward is set to receive $5.6 million this season, $12.4 million in the next two years, and $6.8 million in the final year of his contract.
ESPN reported:
"League sources told ESPN.com that the Kings will be trying to find a new home for forward Jason Thompson, who presumably wouldn't quibble with a fresh start after the arrivals of Gay and Williams to play alongside Cousins.
It remains to be seen, though, what sort of market exists for Thompson, who received a five-year contract extension worth just more than $30 million from the Kings' previous regime under former lead executive Geoff Petrie, who selected the 6-foot-11, 250-pounder with the No. 12 pick in 2008."
On the other hand, the Raptors are also expected to remain active in looking for possible trades as part of the rebuilding plan of Masai Ujiri, who have shed the big contracts of Andrea Bargnani and Gay.
All players except for Jonas Valanciunas are on the block for the Raptors, but the most likely to be dealt soon is point guard Kyle Lowry, who is averaging 14.8 points and 6.7 assists per game this season.
"New Raptors front-office boss Masai Ujiri has managed to trade away Andrea Bargnani and now Gay over the past six months to create financial flexibility going forward and -- with Toronto apparently determined to avoid any accidental success in the Atlantic Division -- is said to be happy to surrender veteran point guard Kyle Lowry next," ESPN reported.
