UFC star Anderson Silva will not be participating in the 2016 Summer Olympics as part of the Brazilian taekwondo team, according to his manager.
"The Spider" has earlier expressed that he wants to participate in the Olympics, tagging it as a "dream opportunity" for him.
However, MMA Junkie has learned that the head of the Brazilian taekwondo team Carlos Fernandes was not pleased with the UFC fighter's intent to join the Olympics since he reportedly "disappeared" after expressing his desire.
"We e-mailed him a few times, but he hasn't responded, and we don't know what's going on. We never said he would participate in the Olympic Games, but that he would be on the tryouts. I think his manager committed a mistake about this. But he didn't communicate to the federation directly. It's a surprise for me," Fernandes said.
Silva reportedly submitted a letter in April in which he expressed that he wanted to "register my desire to represent taekwondo and Brazil in Rio 2016 Olympic Games with all my esteem, strength and honor." There was supposed to be a meeting between him and Fernandes but that obviously did not happen.
This could have been due to the fact that he is still under temporary suspension by the state of Nevada after he failed two drug tests prior and after his fight against Nick Diaz during UFC 183, reports Yahoo Sports.
"This issue of the Olympics has already been ruled out. Anderson will not participate in the Olympics," said Silva's manager, Jorge Guimaraes.
Guimaraes said the Brazilian fighter is set to face the Nevada Athletic Commission for his official disciplinary hearing scheduled on Aug. 7. This will determine how long he will remain suspended and what will be his additional punishments for the failed tests.
"He is now waiting for the verdict of the athletic commission, which should be coming out soon. We are waiting, let's see if there will be punishment and how long it will be. He has trained; Anderson is a guy who will not stop training. He is keeping active," noted his manager.
Meanwhile, Fernandes has expressed that he is still wondering about Silva's sudden change of mind.
"I don't know if he did that because of the moment he was going through. But this is not a joke. It's not a fake theater. The truth is: he doesn't respond our e-mails. Silence implies consent, right? If he's not responding us, he's watching the clock ticking," he said.
The 2016 Summer Olympics will happen from Aug. 3 to 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The games will feature 28 sports, including: golf, gymnastics, aquatic sports, tennis, football, basketball and mixed martial arts, among others.
