Christina Aguilera will be taking a break from being a judge and mentor on reality TV show "The Voice" and in Season 9, her responsibilities will be taken over by another strong female performer, Gwen Stefani.
Gwen was one of the judges on the show's Season 7, and as noted by Host Carson Daly while Season 8 was still airing, the rotating panel is to be expected. He told Us Magazine, "These guys tour. They're not TV people - they're musicians first. We knew that they have to tour around the world and so, unlike other shows, we've always known that we're going to have the revolving chairs. When we can get Usher and Gwen in the mix with these guys, it's been great."
He also added that the rotation of judges does not mean there's trouble in paradise, and as for Christina's relinquishment of her duties as a judge, it's not final.
A source told the magazine, "Christina is confirmed for Season 10 and has already signed her contract. She has been very vocal about not doing Season 9 to take a break to spend time with her family and her kids. She always planned to flip them so she had a season off and she is not being replaced by Gwen. She will definitely be back the next season."
In a statement, NBC's president of alternative and latenight programming, Paul Telegdy, said, "With such an astounding group of coaches at the peak of their musical ingenuity and Carson returning as our host, we are thrilled for what season nine will bring. The expertise and camaraderie of this panel will provide an immeasurable experience for the artists and must-see entertainment for all who are watching."
The No Doubt frontwoman is excited to be back on the spinning chair as well. The Daily Mail quoted her as saying, "I'm coming back and am so excited! I can't believe I get to return to The Voice.
'It's so inspiring to be around such incredible talent and music. I'm looking forward to working again with Adam, Blake and Pharrell. I love those guys."
Should Gwen's contestant win this season, it will be the first time that a female judge would win in the series. Judge Blake Shelton had the most winners, mentoring half of them, with Adam Levine winning twice, while Usher and Pharrell, won a season each.
"The Voice" will return for its ninth season in September.
