Your childhood is officially ruined: After 26 years together, Marge and Homer Simpson are heading to Splitsville, and no, this is not a ruse.
The show's executive producer Al Jean told Variety that Bart, Lisa, and Maggie will be children of legally separated parents next season, so marital problems between their folks will begin as early as the first episode. According to Jean, the troubles will start with Homer being diagnosed with a chronic sleep disorder called narcolepsy, which causes daytime drowsiness. This will take a toll on his marriage with Marge.
For those who are rooting for Marge and Homer to keep their happy ever after (after all, they've been together 26 years even though their kids seemed to be stuck in the same age through the entire run of the show) they will be disappointed. Homer will move on pretty quickly, and will fall in love with his pharmacist, to be voiced by "Girls" actress Lena Dunham.
The Washington Post noted, however, that technically, the Simpsons have been divorced for over a decade. The outlet noted that in a 1996 episode, "A Milhouse Divided," Homer secretly divorced Marge. It was for a good (and pretty romantic) reason though: He wanted to marry her again and he wanted it to be better than the first time they tied the knot at a truck-stop reception. However, in 2009, they learned that the reverend who remarried them did not have a valid license so technically, Homer and Marge have been divorced for almost two decades.
Although Jean already spilled the beans on the biggest spoiler for next season, "The Simpsons" still has a lot of curveballs to throw at their audience. The EP told Variety that among next season's highlights include several other cameos from the cast of "Girls." There will also be an episode where Lisa will befriend a homeless woman who is actually an incredible singer.
Spider Pig will also return, as will Sideshow Bob, who will finally do something that he's always wanted to do for the past 25 years.
Other spoilers were revealed during the ATX Festival Panel in Texas, and yes, it will involve a death of a main character.
Another big episode will be centered on Bart, as they do a spoof of "Boyhood" where Homer and Marge's troublemaker son will be seen at different points in his life.
The next season of "The Simpsons" will premiere on September 27.
