Jon Bernthal will grace Marvel Television's "Daredevil" series as the vigilante The Punisher.
The character, who is also known as Frank Castle, will be a major presence in the second season of "Daredevil," Marvel.com reported. The Punisher aims to rid of Hell's Kitchen, New York City of any crime regardless of how lethal and destructive his ways might be.
Bernthal, 38, previously starred in AMC's "The Walking Dead" as Shane Walsh. He also appeared in films such as "Wolf of Wall Street" and "Fury." Bernthal is in next year's upcoming action thriller movie "The Accountant" as well.
Shortly after the announcement of his "Daredevil" casting, the actor tweeted: "Thanks for the love yall. Let's get it. Honored."
"Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences," said Jeph Loeb, Marvel's Head of Television, as quoted by the news outlet. "Castle's appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same."
Marvel also released a new promotional image alongside the casting announcement. Check out the logo below.
"Daredevil" centers on Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), who was blinded as a young boy but possesses heightened senses. Fighting against injustice and crime, he serves as a lawyer in Hell's Kitchen in the morning, and as the superhero Daredevil by night. The series also stars Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple/Night Nurse), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), and Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk/Kingpin), Marvel.com listed.
Season 1's finale saw Daredevil's opponent, Kingpin, tucked behind bars, Movie Pilot noted. Now that the superhero's foe is imprisoned, fans have been wondering about who will replace the villain for Season 2.
Latino Review claimed that "The Transporter" actor Jason Statham is in negotiation to portray Bullseye. He was previously in talks to play the character in a cinematic reboot of "Daredevil" before Marvel got the rights for the project.
Cox said in the past that he wishes to see Bullseye, Elektra, and The Punisher in Season 2, IGN noted. Now that the latter's involvement has been confirmed, fans will have to wait whether Bullseye and Elektra will also have appearances on the upcoming episodes.
The second season of "Daredevil" will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2016, Comic Book Resources noted. Doug Petrie, Marco Ramirez, Drew Goddard, and Loeb executive produces the series, with Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios serving as producers, Marvel.com added.
"Daredevil" is part of a five-project deal with Netflix involving Marvel's "Defenders," Variety reported. Ramirez, who also serves as a showrunner for Season 2, will reportedly write the screenplay for the live-action "Akira" remake based on the manga series with the same name, several sources reported, including IGN.
