The Sacramento Kings and the Toronto Raptors officially completed a seven-player trade that sent forward Rudy Gay to the Kings on Monday.
The Raptors, who are looking to shed payroll this season as part of general manager Masai Ujiri's rebuilding plan, sent Gay to the Kings along with center Aaron Gray and Quincy Acy. In return, the Raptors received Greivis Vasquez, Patrick Patterson, John Salmons, and Chuck Hayes from the Kings.
Gay, who is looking for a fresh start, expressed his excitement after the trade was sealed, saying that he is looking forward to helping the Kings, which has been very aggressive in improving their lineup under their new ownership group led by Vivek Ranadive.
"Excited to say the least," Gay said in an interview as reported by ESPN. "I have a couple guys with me that came with me. It's a new beginning. I've been saying it all day. They have a lot of young pieces and I'm glad to be a part of it."
The trade was the second major move of the Kings under their new ownership group and general manager Pete D'Alessandro. Late last month, the Kings acquired former second-overall pick Derrick Williams from the Minnesota Timberwolves for defensive-minded forward Luc Mbah A Moute.
The acquisition of Gay will reshape the Kings' payroll as the high-flying forward is set to receive $17.7 million this season and has a $19.3 million player option for next season, but D'Alessandro said that they are willing to take financial risks in the hopes of improving their roster.
"We need players here in Sacramento and that's just the bottom line," D'Alessandro said. "We've had a lot of really good backups for a long time and now we are acquiring starters. That's the first step."
Gay, Gray, and Acy is scheduled to take physicals on Tuesday and the new acquisitions are expected to suit up in Sacramento's match against the Utah Jazz on Wednesday.
