Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner reportedly filed annulment documents to end her less-than-a-month marriage to Tulsa Shock's Glory Johnson.
An updated TMZ report reveals that Griner claimed she has no biological connection to the baby Johnson is carrying. Recently, the Tulsa Shock forward announced that they are expecting a baby in the family.
Griner reportedly expressed in the documents that her marriage to Johnson was based on "fraud and duress," since she was only "pressured into marriage under duress by [Johnson's] threatening statements."
In a statement quoted by ESPN, Griner said they have both decided to part ways on Wednesday.
"Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage. I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment. In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake," she went on.
Three weeks before their marriage on May 8, it can be remembered that the two were arrested for domestic violence charges after fighting in their Arizona home, inflicting physical injuries to each other. The Phoenix Mercury player agreed to plead guilty to disorderly conduct. She was required to attend 26 weeks of counselling. The couple also received a seven-game suspension, each, from the WNBA.
The two women were both considered "victims" at the time of arrest, but Johnson's lawyer, Howard Snader, recently told Sports Illustrated that Johnson was the target rather than the perpetrator. He noted that Johnson was hit on the head twice -- with a heavy case -- while Griner only sustained minor scratches.
"A CT scan corroborated that Johnson had experienced head trauma and suffered a concussion. The CT scan also found evidence of spinal trauma," Sports Illustrated wrote.
Things have turned out pretty messy for the couple since the incident, but they still managed to push through the wedding, noting that they were ready to work things out.
In another TMZ report, Johnson claimed that she was "blindsided" with Griner's decision to have the marriage annulled, and that she was "extremely hurt" with the turn of events.
Johnson's sports marketing agent DJ Fisher told TMZ that she was not aware of the filing and that she still loves and cares for her wife.
"Glory loves Brittney and made a huge sacrifice to carry a child, put her career on hold, to invest in their relationship and their future. As a result she won't be playing this season. Glory wouldn't intentionally do anything to hurt Brittney and has tried her best to protect her and their marriage. Obviously this marriage was about them starting their life together. Glory is the sweetest thing in the world and she was dedicated to their partnership," added Johnson's representative.
