Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks expressed disappointment over their humiliating 41-point loss to the Boston Celtics on Sunday, calling their debacle an "embarrassment" in front of their home crowd.
The Knicks absorbed a humbling 114-73 loss at Madison Square Garden, which was the team's third-worst defeat at home and the most lopsided defeat of the 2013-14 NBA season.
"What Boston came here and did was an embarrassment," Anthony said in a statement via ESPN New York. "To lose like that on our home court, I think everybody should be pissed off."
After the loss, the Knicks dropped to 5-14 this season, which is currently the second-worst record in the league. Their current struggles, according to experts, could convince Anthony to bolt out of New York next summer when he becomes a free agent.
Despite Anthony's impending free agency, the Knicks recently said that they will not explore possible trades involving the superstar forward before the deadline. However, Fox Sports Ohio pointed out that the Knicks should consider trading Anthony instead of taking the risk of losing him for nothing next offseason.
Fox Sports reported:
"Things are only getting worse. So they should trade Carmelo while they can. Anthony can opt of his contract and become a free agent at season's end. He's indicated that is precisely what he'll do. The Knicks run the risk of losing him for nothing.
League executive seem to think the Knicks could receive a handsome return for Anthony. Plenty of teams would be happy to rent him for the season to put people in the seats. Others could try to steal him for a playoff push. A deal, including one involving a third or fourth team can always be made."
Anthony, last season's scoring champion, is averaging 25.2 points and 9.7 rebounds per game this season -- numbers that are expected to attract teams that are looking to contend for a title this season.
