Online Trolls Trick Xbox One Users Into Bricking Console

Some online users are nefariously tricking gullible Xbox One users into breaking or destroying their new console through faulty online manuals.

These online manuals seek to trick users into thinking that the Xbox One can be modified into being backwards compatible, which would allow Xbox 360 games to be able to work on the console. However, these instructions not only do not allow for backwards compatibility, but can brick a console and make it so users cannot use the console anymore.

Microsoft has now gotten wind of these online trickers, and representatives such as Major Nelson have taken to Twitter have warned users that there is no way to make the console work with Xbox 360 games:

"To be clear there is no way to make your Xbox One backwards compatible & performing steps to attempt this could make your console inoperable."

Not only have tricksters tried to convince users to break their Xbox One console by claiming a few modifications could make the console backwards compatible, but others have claimed that it is possible to easily turn the console into a dev kit for creating new games. Microsoft have also clarified that this is not possible as well.

Part of the problem that prevents the Xbox One from using Xbox 360 games is that the hardware is of a different design than the Xbox 360, so the Xbox 360 software would not be able to function with the new architecture for the Xbox One's CPU. Another factor is that the Xbox 360 used HD DVD's as the software technology for games, while the Xbox One uses blu-rays. Hence, the Xbox One has a blu-ray player instead of an HD DVD player, so inserting an Xbox 360 game into the Xbox One simply will not work.

Though the Xbox One will not support backwards compatibility, Microsoft may be able to bring classic Xbox and Xbox 360 games to the console using cloud streaming services. Microsoft is working on the Azure cloud service, which can make it so select games from previous Xbox consoles can be streamed right to a user's console. However, the console is not quite ready for use at this time, so it may be months or years before it is available. Sony is preparing a similar service for the PlayStation 4 through the Gaikai cloud service, and the PlayStation 4 is also not backwards compatible.
