The Los Angeles Dodgers are determined to unload big contracts, and at the same time, acquire more firepower as they look into the possibility of trading an outfielder this offseason, the Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti confirmed on Saturday.
The trade rumors continue to heat up, and the hottest news involves the Dodgers possibly trading some of their big-name outfielders — Carl Crawford, Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig — this winter.
In an interview with MLB.com writer Ken Gurnick, Colletti didn't rule out chances of trading an outfielder to bolster the team's pitching unit, specifically its bullpen.
"We've got four really good outfielders and we've got to be careful. We can't sell off to sell off and in 2015 say, 'Let's go get an outfielder on the free-agent market," Colletti told MLB.com. "We've checked the list. It's not overloaded with choices. There's a lack of impact outfielders available. We better be sure if we make a move that we help our club for a while."
Willing To Pull It Off
Colletti stressed he won't think twice about trading someone if the trade offer makes sense.
"Tell me who and tell me what it looks like," Colletti said "We're open to do it if it makes sense and we like what we get back. We have pitching, but we're a little lean in position players. If there's a way to shore up and get younger, that would be key in a couple ways in looking at it for us."
The Dodgers executive admitted that he has been receiving numerous offers for their outfielders, particularly Kemp, who has still $128 million left in his current deal and missed a large bulk of games due to injuries these past two seasons.
According to Kemp's agent Dave Stewart, there's a strong chance Kemp will be playing for another team next season.
"This is the first time we've experienced this," Stewart said, according to ESPN. "This is the first time we've heard it this much, and the first time we really believe something could happen."
The Boston Red Sox appear to be the strongest candidate to nab Kemp in the winter meetings, but the Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays are other teams that could make a run for the All-Star slugger.
