Jaden Smith is set to portray a DC Comics superhero.
In a recent interview with Flicks and the City, "The Walking Dead" actor Tyler James Williams revealed that Will Smith's 16-year-old son is in line to portray DC Comics' Static.
While discussing the lack of "young, black superheroes" in Hollywood, two people in the event can be heard shouting "Static Shock" and "Spider-Man" in the background, ComicBook reported.
"I don't know... What you're talking about," Williams replied, as quoted by ComicBook. "But yeah no, it's great to see 'Static Shock' is happening with Jaden [Smith]."
Listen to Williams' interview below.
Flickering Myth first reported about Smith's possible portrayal of Static back in October 2014. According to the news outlet, the live-action digital series titled "Static Shock" from Warner Bros. is being developed by "Django Unchained" and "The Boondocks" producer Reginald Hudlin.
Smith's parents, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, have been in a working relationship with Warner Bros. for quite some time now, Flickering Myth wrote. Jada is on Fox's "Gotham" while Will is in the upcoming film "Suicide Squad" as Deadshot.
For those unacquainted with the character, Wikia's page for DC Comics describes Static, whose real name is Virgil Hawkins, as a Bang Baby hailing from Dakota City who possesses advanced powers of electromagnetism. The character was originally featured in 1993's "Static #1" and was created by Dwayne McDuffie, Robert L. Washington III, and John Paul Leon for Milestone Comics, ComicBook noted.
Back in January, Hudlin spoke to Comic Book Resources about "Static Shock," describing the project as "a great process" and "the most exciting thing" he's working on presently.
"It's weird, because so much of it comes from what Static is as a concept," Hudlin told the news outlet. "It's amazing, because Static as an idea is more timely than ever. Part of it is just how history moves. But in terms of social relevance and who he is and what he represents, it's perfect."
He continued, "It's a project that's very much on the fast track. I don't have a timetable for you, I don't have any real details about it, but it's moving very quickly, and literally everyone who's in the room loses their mind."
When asked what contributed to Static's huge popularity among Milestone characters, Hudlin said that the superhero's personality and positive outlook in life helped him have a long life in the Milestone Universe. He added that in a lot of ways, Static "feels more grounded in the real world than a lot of superhero characters," Comic Book Resources quoted.
Milestone 2.0's co-founder Denys Cowan defined Static as "aspirational" and someone who "represents light in every situation," the news outlet reported.
"Whenever you hear his name, there's a positive feeling, not a bad feeling," Cowan further explained to Comic Book Resources.
