Formula One champion Michael Schumacher seems to be in a long road to his recovery, but a Swiss watch brand has not forgotten to honor his contributions to the sport by launching a new edition watch that's named after the racer.
Forbes said luxury watch brand Audemars Piguet has introduced the Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher watch based from the 2010 request of the racer to create a mechanical watch for motorsport use. The device could reportedly measure every single lap and even an extended series of consecutive laps on the sidelines.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Schumacher and Audemars Piguet CEO Francois Bennahmias worked closely together to develop the watch.
"Michael said, 'You say you are the world's best watchmakers. Then make me a watch that times laps one after the other,'" Bennahmias shared.
In Oct. 2013, the CEO said he presented the prototype to Schumacher, who was said to be pretty amazed by it.
"It was a true watchmaking challenge, actually," said CEO of Audemars Piguet North America Xavier Nolot, adding that the watch took five years to finally be completed. While it was being developed, Schumacher had a ski accident at the French Alps which caused him severe brain injuries. The watch company decided to continue working on the watch despite the accident.
"It would have been a shame to stop things. That is why the family is absolutely behind launching the watch," said Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm.
Available in the market now, the Schumacher watch costs $229,500. There will only be 221 timepieces since this is the "record-breaking number of races in which Mr. Schumacher scored points."
Wall Street said the watch will come in a forged-carbon case which is 44 millimeters wide and 12.7 millimeters thick, with the black rubber strap having a titanium folding clasp.
"Everyone was working hard for five years. Now we have finished. We would like to show the world," said Kehm.
Following the tragic ski accident, news about the condition of the Formula One racer has been scarce since his family wanted a news blackout amid his recovery and rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, Kehm, continues to "aggressively guard" details about Schumacher's current status with Gospel Herald noting that even media in Germany and Switzerland are quiet about the F1 racer, who is recovering at his home near Lake Geneva.
There are no specifics on Schumacher's ongoing recovery but Gospel Herald said that there are rumors about him still unable to speak and being bound to the wheelchair.
The watch is a great way to remember the F1 champion and his contributions to the sport and will also boost hope that he may recover very soon.
