The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly taking steps to land former American League Cy Young winner and current Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher David Price, a source close to situation reported on Saturday.
With the trading and free agency market heating up over the past two days, many are still surprised to see Price staying put with the Rays.
Price, who is arguably the best pitcher available on the trading floor this offseason, has drawn interest from at least seven teams, one of them are the free-spending Los Angeles Dodgers.
"The Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks and Toronto Blue Jays are among the teams that not only have an interest in Price but believe they can put together the sort of package to pry Price from the Rays, sources said," Yahoo Sports MLB insider Jeff Passan stated.
Dodgers To Fortify Pitching Rotation
The Los Angeles Dodgers already boast one of the most formidable starting rotations in the major league with two-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw, another CY Young awardee Zach Greinke, and newly-acquired Dan Haren leading the charge on the mound.
However, the Dodgers are reportedly interested in adding more firepower to their pitching rotation, and a potent left-handed pitcher such as Price appears to be on top of their wish list.
Price, who went 10-8 with 3.33 ERA and 151 strikeouts in 27 starts for the Rays last season, is expected to be expensive on the free agency market when his contract expires after next season.
The Rays have already expressed their intention to trade their ace pitcher this coming Winter Meeting in Orlando, Florida, provided that the interested team has the prospects and top position players to get the deal done.
"I've been told there is no doubt David Price is on the market if a team has the prospects (including top position player),'' David Vassegh tweeted this week.
Loaded with farm prospects and tradable assets on their roster, the Dodgers are very much capable of pulling off a deal for Price. The Dodgers have been shopping Andre Ethier, Carl Crawford and Matt Kemp in an attempt to unload some of their big contracts. They also have the farm prospects to sweeten the deal.
Though it's uncertain whether or not the Rays will absorb such big contracts, this year's winter meetings will surely provide all sorts of surprises.
