Reese Witherspoon will breathe life into Tinker Bell on the big screen.
According to several sources, including The Hollywood Reporter, the 39-year-old actress will star and produce in Disney's live-action remake titled "Tink," which will be based on Peter Pan's well-known sidekick first introduced in the production company's 1953 classic animated feature.
Victoria Sprouse, who also wrote the screenplay of Pixar's upcoming sequel "Finding Dory," will write the script for "Tink," The Hollywood Reporter wrote. A director for the project, however, is yet to be announced. Witherspoon will be producing the flick alongside Bruna Papandrea, the movie star's partner at their production company, Pacific Standard.
Details about the film's narrative are still under wraps, but sources revealed that "it will play with the idea and the timeline of the well-known 'Peter Pan' narrative," the news outlet added.
In addition, "Tink" is being developed in the same line as the 2014 Angelina Jolie-starrer "Maleficent," which features a twist on the famous Disney villain from "Sleeping Beauty." The live-action remake about Tinker Bell will encompass "the story you don't know" angle and will showcase the character in a new light.
Entertainment Weekly wrote that in the 1950s "Peter Pan" cartoon, Tinker Bell was portrayed as mute, temperamental, and jealous due to her unrequited love for the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. The tiny fairy's characterization is still unexplored and it provides the live-action remake plenty of opportunity to tell her story.
Julia Roberts portrayed Tinker Bell in 1991's "Hook" when she was just in her 20s, Entertainment Weekly noted. Given that Witherspoon is older, the remake could focus on a more grown up version of Tinker Bell. French actress Ludivine Sagnier also portrayed the character in the 2003 film "Peter Pan," Daily Mail noted.
Unlike "Maleficent" and Disney's other recent remakes, "Tink" "is being developed to be made in a more modest, midrange budget," The Hollywood Reporter added.
Witherspoon currently has the film "Hot Pursuit" in theaters, which she co-stars with "Modern Family" actress Sofia Vergara, Daily Mail reported. The actress also produced and starred in last year's "Wild," a movie adapted from Cheryl Strayed's 2012 memoir. Witherspoon earned an Academy Award nomination for her work in the film.
Years before, she won in the Best Actress category of the prestigious award-winning body for her role as June Carter Cash in 2005's "Walk the Line," the news outlet noted. The "Legally Blonde" lead will also star and produce in the drama "Pale Blue Dot."
