Viewers saw the debut of Patrick Jane's life after Red John on the latest episode of "The Mentalist."
In "My Blue Heaven," viewers catch up with Jane (Simon Baker) two years after Jane caught and killed Red John, who turned out to be the Sheriff Tom McAllister (Xander Berkeley). The CBI team disbanded after their departmental shutdown and the FBI takeover.
Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) moved to a sleepy town in Washington called Canon River, where she works as a police officer. Kimball Cho (Tim Kang) graduated from Quantico and became a part of FBI agent Dennis Abbott's (Rockmond Dunbar) team, and married couple Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) opened up their own surveillance company.
Meanwhile, Jane is living in a small seaside town in a Spanish-speaking country, where he spends time hanging out at the beach and going to the local bar.
FBI Agent Abbott makes a visit to Lisbon's new home, and sees a seashell on her desk. Abbott asks her where it came from, knowing that it has something to do with Jane's location. It's revealed later on that he and the FBI were intercepting letters that Jane wrote to Lisbon, whih helped the FBI find Jane's whereabouts.
On the episode, Jane also meets a woman named Kim (Emily Swallow), who is a new addition to the series.
Abbott then makes a visit to Jane, and tells him that he's willing to drop Jane's charges if he agrees to work with the FBI. Jane says he's "done" with all of that, and wants to move on.
After some convicining by Kim, Jane tells Abbott that he'll return to the U.S. if its on his own terms, which would mean bringing Lisbon back into the mix. Abbott seemingly agrees to all of his conditions.
But as soon as Jane is back in the U.S., Abbott changes his tune. Jane's charges 20 years to life for homicide, aggravated assault, grand-theft auto and obstruction of justice can disappear if he agrees to be a consultant for the FBI for at least five years. (But the deal can be revoked by Abbott at any time.)
Jane is not happy with the terms, and says he wants no parole, and to be able to work with Lisbon. Abbott refuses, and locks him in an FBI dentention center for not agreeing to his deal. It also turns out that Kim is FBI agent Kim Fischer.
On the next episode, "Green Thumb," the FBI will reluctantly enlist Patrick's help to find a missing computer programmer, but he won't help unless Lisbon is brought on board as well.
On upcoming episodes, Rigsby and Van Pelt will also return, and "Devious Maids'" Brianna Brown will guest star as Krystal Markham, a woman connected to an FBI case.
To both Lisbon and Agent Fischer's surprise, Jane will ask Krystal, a widower, out on a date.
Watch the promo for "Green Thumb" below, which airs at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 on CBS.
