The end of 2014's "The Maze Runner" saw the Gladers finally escaping the maze. With the first official sneak peek for the movie's sequel, "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials," now released, Dylan O'Brien's Thomas must find out that their saviors are not what they seemed to be.
Watch the brand new trailer for "The Scorch Trials" below. Last March, Entertainment Weekly shared a few set photos from the sequel. Check it out here.
Aside from O'Brien, the trailer also features cast members Kaya Scodelario, Ki Hong Lee, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster reprising their respective roles as four of the young people imprisoned in the huge maze highlighted in the first movie, Daily Mail wrote. Picking up right after the original film's ending, the Gladers find themselves in a sealed off building led by "Game of Thrones" actor Aidan Gillen, who portrays the character of the mysterious Janson.
The group soon finds out that they are not the only young people who have been tested, tortured, and were put in a cruel mechanical maze. Thomas then discovers a horrifying secret, prompting him to convince his friends to escape the facility with him.
That plan, however, was with consequences. Thomas' group discovers that the world they once knew has now become a wasteland. The city now lies under deep layers of sand teeming with unusual and deadly creatures, Daily Mail added.
These vicious creatures include the solar flare-infected humans known as Cranks. According to director Wes Ball, "We don't want to call them zombies, but they fit into that category. They're not undead, but they are rage-filled," Entertainment Weekly quoted.
"The first movie was the mystery of 'Where are we and what is this place? And can we get out?' But the second movie is about the repercussions of getting out and the discovery of what the world is actually like," said producer Wyck Godfrey, as reported by the news outlet.
Patricia Clarkson is also set to return to her role as the WCKD scientist Ava Paige, Deadline reported. Newcomers include Lili Taylor as Mary Cooper, a doctor who leads a group of survivors "in the hopes of making a last stand," IGN noted. Barry Pepper, Jacob Lofland, Nathalie Emmanuel, Rosa Salazar, and Giancarlo Esposito will also star.
T.S. Nowlin is back as the screenwriter for "The Scorch Trials," Deadline added. The original film became a blockbuster hit when it earned $340 million in theaters worldwide and $102 million domestically. The movie's international success gave way to two sequels, "The Scorch Trials" and "The Death Cure," which is set for release in 2017. The franchise is based on James Dashner's series of YA novels.
"The Scorch Trials" will debut in theaters on September 18, 2015.
