Google Nexus device owners can once again proudly snag a new version of Android before anybody else. The Mountain View-based search giant has officially released Android 4.4.1 KitKat for the Google Nexus 5, Nexus 4 and Nexus 7.
The upgrade was confirmed for the Nexus 5 smartphone by Google, but owners of the Nexus 4 handset and Nexus 7 tablet have also reported receiving the new firmware. Not everybody will have received a download notification at this point due to the phased nature of Android firmware releases, but it shouldn't be long before most Nexus 5s, Nexus 4s, and Nexus 7s have Android 4.4.1 KitKat up and running.
Owners of the Nexus 5 will see the biggest improvement, with Google drastically improving the camera quality (a common complaint among Nexus 5 users) as it has promised over the past few weeks.
"It improves the camera with faster focusing, especially in low light, faster white balancing, for truer colors, the ability to pinch-zoom the viewfinder in HDR+ mode and less shutter lag," says Google about the update.
For Nexus 5 owners, this means a giant uptick in picture quality when shooting moving objects.
As far as what improvements Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 owners can expect, it doesn't look like there's too much. Android 4.4.1 fixes a problem with Exchange that caused severe battery drainage and Nexus 4 users will finally have access to a transparent lockscreen.
