Newly-married couple and WNBA players Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson have been slapped with a seven-game suspension following their arrest for domestic violence charges last month.

The Associated Press said this is the longest ban in the league's 19-year history with WNBA president Laurel Richie saying that they take acts of violence seriously and tagged the behavior of the two as "unacceptable."

"Brittney and Glory's conduct is detrimental to the best interests of the WNBA and violates applicable law. We also understand that people make mistakes, and that education and training are as important as imposing discipline," Richie said in a statement quoted by AP.

Griner, who plays for the Phoenix Mercury, and Johnson, who is part of the Tulsa Shock, were arrested last month on suspicion of assault inside their own home. The Mercury star pled guilty to misdemeanour disorderly conduct and had to enter a diversion program to have the assault charge dismissed.

According to AP, Griner was required to attend 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling. "All charges will be dismissed if she completes counseling. Johnson's case was transferred to county court and is still pending," added the same report.

"I have already learned a tremendous amount from this experience and am committed to improving myself and my marriage going forward. I want to thank everyone for their support over these last few weeks. I realize I let down a lot of people who have been champions for me and I will support my teammates and our organization every day until I am back on the court," Griner said.

The league reportedly found out details on the incident and revealed that Johnson pushed Griner's shoulder, with the former retaliating with a push at the back of the neck. It became more violent as the two started exchanging punches and throwing things at each other.

The New York Times reported that Griner had a bite wound on her finger and scratches on her wrist while Johnson had a scratch above her lip and a concussion.

In deciding about the punishment for the two players, Richie noted that she sought the help of NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and other experts.

Despite all the fuss created by the incident, the two decided to work things out and push through with their marriage last May 8.

The Dallas Morning News said the two walked hand in hand in a ceremony done in a Phoenix resort. It was a momentous event attended by 75 people close to the couple.

On her Instagram account, Griner posted a lovely wedding photo with the caption "I don't care if the the world was ending at this moment! Nothing could of [sic] kept me from my wife. I think I cried the whole day until I saw her walking down that isle. Then in a [sic] instant I was calm and full of love and all the tears turned into huge smiles and a joy that no one can explain unless you have found and married your soulmate.I love you so much my beautiful Wife."
