Will Dr. Dre ever release “Detox?” Probably not at this point. It’s been over 12 years since his last studio album. Supposed deadlines for its followup have passed again and again, leaving fans painstakingly anxious to hear what he has in store next. But it’s important to remember that Dre remains hard at work. He’s not slacking, too lazy to produce new music or unable to create another monster album. He’s smarter than that. Not only does he invest much of his time in Beats by Dre, but he’s producing for other musicians, helping them build their careers while simultaneously expanding his empire.
In his most recent collaboration, Dre teamed up with Kendrick Lamar to help promote two lines of Beats’ Pill speakers while showcasing a brand new song. In the ad, the two rappers perform the process of creating the song, which is very possibly a Kendrick song we’ve never heard before with Dre as the producer.
The video begins with Dre and Kendrick alone in a vacant studio late at night, struggling to find the right sound to finish their track, quickly parting ways after several discouraging takes. The next morning, as they’re both listening to the song via Dre’s Beats’ Pill speakers, Dre calls Kendrick to tell him that he’s figured it out. To learn the answer, watch the video for yourself below, but more importantly, catch the first inkling of new Kendrick Lamar backed by the one and only Dr. Dre. It may not be the “Detox” we’ve all been anticipating for over a decade, but it’s exciting nonetheless to hear new music from two highly revered artists.
