For those eager for more Daft Punk, today is your lucky day. The initial hype surrounding their most recent album, “Random Access Memories,” has passed, but the french synth pop duo remains hard at work to appease their fans.
Daft Punk has released its music video for “Instant Crush,” featuring Julian Casablancas from The Strokes. The video tells a tragic love story featuring museum dummies, one of which bears a striking resemblance to Casablancas. Daft Punk and their robot helmets make a subtle and very brief appearance in the video, which can easily be missed if you’re not paying full attention. The video is simply, but it's a step above earlier videos from the album. Both the "Get Lucky" and "Lose Yourself to Dance" videos were nothing more than the band strutting their stuff, playing their songs to an adoring audience drenched in post-work color gradients. Watch the "Instant Crush" video for yourself below.
The video was directed by Warren Fu and produced by Daft Arts. Daft Punk drew inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” and “The Twilight Zone.” The same man who designed Daft Punk’s helmets and worked as the lead makeup artist on Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Tony Gardner, sculpted Casablancas’ face.
Not only did Daft Punk debut the “Instant Crush” video, but Mixmag has also just unveiled a new mini documentary titled “Daft Punk - Behind the Helmets.” The episode offers a brief history behind the duo’s coveted helmets, finally, which have become a staple in the Daft Punk brand.
The mini documentary reveals the true secrets behind the masks, but unfortunately includes very little about the men behind them. Regardless, it’s still jam packed with fun, interesting facts. For example, did you know that the same man who invented the Jumbotron helped design Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo’s helmet? To learn more about their helmets (who wouldn’t), check it out for yourself below.
