Fox's "Gotham" will feature two iconic Batman villains for its second season.
This week's network upfronts confirmed that The Joker and Mr. Freeze will appear in Season 2. Granted, showrunner Bruno Heller already revealed that The Joker is set to terrorize the upcoming season, but the tragic villain Mr. Freeze comes in a surprise.
"We're going to find out how the hell Jerome (Cameron Monaghan), the proto-Joker we met earlier in this season, connects with the Joker as people known him. That's the big focus of the beginning of the second season. We're going to tell the story of how the Joker came to be," Heller said, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.
For those unacquainted with the character, Cinema Blend wrote that Mr. Freeze started out as Dr. Victor Fries, "a cryogenics scientist whose attempts to cure his terminally ill wife Nora end in an accident where he must wear a cryogenic suit in order to stay alive."
Season 2 will also showcase other villains such as The Riddler, Clayface, and Mad Hatter. Cinema Blend added. It was also announced that "Homeland" alumna Morena Baccarin will be a series regular in the upcoming season. The actress portrayed the recurring character of Dr. Leslie Thompkins in Season 1 and was also the love interest for Benjamin McKenzie's Jim Gordon, TV Line reported.
Baccarin first appeared on "Gotham" in January and was described by TV Line as a "gifted and dedicated physician who was a friend of the late Thomas and Martha Wayne." In the original DC comics, the character served as a surrogate mother to Bruce Wayne after the Crime Alley tragedy and then later became Batman's confidant.
The May 4 Season 1 finale of "Gotham" titled "All Happy Families Are Alike" saw crime boss Carmine Falcon (John Doman) retiring to Florida, while Butch (Drew Powell) shot Oswald (Robin Taylor) and Fish (Jada Pinkett Smith), The Hollywood Reporter wrote. Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) also tried to kill Baccarin's Leslie.
Speaking about Barbara's decline into insanity, Heller explained, "The plot between Barbara and Lee came out of the show as it developed. We always knew from the start that Barbara was the wrong woman for Gordon," the news outlet quoted. He also promised that fans will get to see the consequences of Barbara's attack on Lee in future episodes.
One of the finale's unexpected changes was Camren Bicondova's Selina Kyle, who went from "street thief to gun-toting mole upon Fish's reappearance," The Hollywood Reporter wrote. However, Heller explained that the character didn't exactly turn into a villain and she was more of a teenager in the process of discovering herself.
"Gotham" will return to Fox on its Monday night schedule this fall.
