Former NFL player Aaron Hernandez has been charged with witness intimidation in the double-murder case for which he is also being tried.
Citing prosecutors, the Associated Press said the former New England Patriots player allegedly attempted to silence his former friend Alexander Bradley by shooting him in the face and leaving him for dead along a roadside. The latest charge is connected to the killing of two men in Boston in July 2012.
The Suffolk County DA's office, in a report quoted by the Associated Press, said that Hernandez allegedly shot the witness after talking about the Boston killings in February 2013 and Hernandez allegedly left him to die on the side road in Riviera Beach, Florida. The DA's office did not reveal the witness' name but the Associated Press said that other court proceedings revealed it was Bradley.
Yahoo Sports earlier reported that Hernandez allegedly opened fire on an SUV in July 2012 which killed two men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, and wounded another.
Based on the allegations of prosecutors, Hernandez and Bradley were hanging out at Cure when de Abreu bumped into Hernandez and spilled his drink. This reportedly angered Hernandez who allegedly left the club in rage and waited inside his silver SUV for de Abreu to leave.
"At 2:10 a.m., video shows Hernandez's SUV circling the block as de Abreu, Safiro Furtado and three others walk to a BMW. Shortly thereafter, prosecutors allege Hernandez pulled alongside the BMW at a stoplight and opened fire on the car, killing de Abreu, 29, and Furtado, 28, and injuring a third passenger," explained Yahoo Sports.
Hernandez could be prosecuted in Massachusetts because "he is accused of willfully causing injury to a witness with the intent to impede a criminal investigation in Suffolk County," the Associated Press wrote. There is still no scheduled arraignment for the witness intimidation charge though the double murder charge will be heard on May 21, but Hernandez's is not expected to attend during the hearing and will only be represented by his lawyers.
TMZ said that if the former NFL player will be convicted for witness intimidation, he could face up to 10 years in prison. Add this up to his lifetime imprisonment after he was convicted for the death of Odin Lloyd, who was killed in June 2013, in an industrial park located near Hernandez's home.
Hernandez is currently spending his prison life at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley.
