The New York Knicks are off to a disastrous start in the 2013-14 NBA season after tallying 54 regular-season wins last season, which reportedly has put head coach Mike Woodson on the hot seat.

Knicks owner James Dolan previously gave his vote of confidence to Woodson last month, but the New York Post reported that the veteran coach could be on his way out soon after the Knicks dropped 13 of their first 16 games this season.

If Dolan decides to fire Woodson, sources said that former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy will be on top of the list of possible successors.

Dolan and Van Gundy reportedly have not talked to each other since the latter stepped down as the coach of the Knicks during the 2001-02 season before mending fences last season when Van Gundy broadcasted a Knicks game for ABC at Madison Square Garden.

Van Gundy, who holds a 248-172 coaching record during his tenure with the Knicks, also expressed regret over his decision to leave New York.

"It's something I regret to this day," Van Gundy said on quitting his Knicks coaching post in 2001. "I live with it every day and I regret it. And I let my emotions come into it. And I was just emotionally spent. I made a bad decision and I quit. I had a great job with the Knicks."

Aside from Van Gundy, former Knicks superstar Allan Houston, who is being groomed as the next general manager of the Knicks, could also be in the mix for the Knicks head coaching post, the New York Daily News reported.

"Allan Houston, supposedly the GM in training, looms as a potential successor. The word around Knicks camp is that Dolan wouldn't hesitate to promote him to head coach if the Knicks don't turn things around sooner than later. Houston's $100 million contract placed the Knicks in salary cap purgatory for years. Maybe having to coach this Knicks team would be his payback," the Daily News noted.

George Karl, who coached Carmelo Anthony in Denver, and former Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins have also been mentioned in talks about a possible replacement for Woodson if Dolan decides to pull the trigger.
