Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner chose not to participate in the training camp of the US women's national basketball team which started Monday.
According to AP Sports, Griner was recently arrested on suspicion of assault after she fought with her fiancée WNBA player Glory Johnson. Griner was reportedly one of the 27 players included in the list of players and she made the USA Basketball know about the decision last weekend.
''Given all the circumstances of the last couple of weeks, she's got a lot going on. She decided not to attend. We're fully supportive of her," said US national team director Carol Callan in the AP Sports report.
The news outlet added that the Mercury player signed a diversion agreement where she admitted to disorderly conduct. She is ordered to attend 26 weeks of domestic violence counselling after which all charges against her will be dismissed.
U.S. coach Geno Auriemma told AP Sports that it would be important to fix all her issues.
''I would say it's not easy being Brittney Griner. These kinds of things happen all throughout the country every single day. When it happens to someone who's high profile, and especially in women's sports, it becomes even more of a story. I'm glad she's taking the time to sort it all out. When she's ready to come back we'll do whatever we can to support her,'' Auriemma said.
The league is reportedly doing its own investigation on the incident involving Griner and Johnson and an AP Sports source said that Griner has met and talked to the WNBA last week.
There is a possibility that the couple, who earlier said they will work things out, could be paying a fine or facing suspension or termination.
The charges on Griner stemmed from a physical fight between the couple two weeks ago. Sports Illustrated reported that the two sustained minor injuries after the fight which was reportedly caused by extreme stress that came with their preparations for their wedding this month.
"They will continue to work through these hardships together and ask that the media respect their privacy as they handle this family matter. Glory and Brittney sincerely apologize for the distraction this has caused their families, respective teams, the WNBA, sponsors, and fans," said Griner's lawyer David Michael Cantor in a statement quoted by ESPN.
In her statement to the police, Griner explained that she and Johnson had been arguing every day and that they finally clashed inside their newly-bought house. ESPN noted that Johnson claimed that Griner disrespected her, prompting the former to push her. Griner retaliated by pushing Johnson.
By the end of the fight, Griner sustained a laceration on her right wrist and a tooth mark on the middle finger of her right hand while Johnson had a cut on her lip.
In her Instagram page, Johnson recently posted a photo of her biting Griner on the cheek with the caption "WE'RE OK! @brittneygriner and I are home, injury-free, and still wedding planning! We know we must set better examples, even during the most trying times, and we are EXTREMELY sorry for all the negative attention we brought to ourselves, our family, and the league. We are actively seeking help in order to do BETTER. Thanks for all the Love, Support, and Prayers that were sent our way."
