Weeks into the Boston Marathon Bombing trial, Dzhokar Tsarnaev remained stoic --- so much so that many have thought his heart to be made of stone. However, even the most heartless of criminals have weaknesses, and for the 21-year-old, his weakness is his family.

According to CS Monitor, for nearly two months into the trial, Tsarnaev appeared "statue-like", even as he listened to victims describing their injuries. When he was pronounced guilty of 30 charges in relation to the bombings that killed three people and injured 264 others, he was devoid of emotion.

But then half a dozen relatives from Russia arrived to testify on his behalf, and he finally came crumbling down. ABC News noted that the young man's relatives have been in the U.S. for over two weeks now, and were "fitted with ankle bracelets and living under 'hotel arrest'". The report added that they were only permitted to travel to the States on Significant Public Benefit Parole or S-Visas.

The New York Times reported that Tsarnaev hasn't seen his relatives since he left Russia in 2002, and it is likely that the trial is going to be the last time that he will see them, as well, as the news site noted that after the sentencing, he will be executed or locked behind bars for the rest of his life.

The testimonies, according to ABC, aims to "humanize Tsarnaev" and provide evidence that he was under the influence of Tamerlan, his older brother. Before the arrival of his relatives from Russia, most of Tsarnaev's defense focused on portraying Tamerlan as the leader of the bombing, and the defendant was merely a pawn, following on his brother's orders. Tamerlan died in a shootout with the police a few days after the bombing took place.

Tsarnaev's stone-cold mask cracked when his aunt, Patimat Suleimanova, cried uncontrollably, that she had to leave the witness stand.

As The New York Times reported, his weeping at the sight of his sobbing aunt is the first visible reaction that he has had during the trial. Family photographs that his relatives brought for the defense showed an easygoing youth that would not head a bombing, unlike his hulking older brother, who was noted to be strong-willed and violence-prone. The defense team has maintained that Tamerlan was the mastermind behind the bombings.

BBC also noted that one cousin said that Tsarnaev was a gentle child, someone who cried while watching Disney's animated classic "The Lion King."

But the question remains: Could someone sensitive enough to cry over fictional lions be guilty of the bombings that devastated Boston in 2013?
