During Thursday's NFL draft, the New England Patriots chose Texas defensive tackle Malcom Brown for the No. 32 overall pick, with his Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong very much excited for Browns' achievement.
But with all his excitement brewing, Strong reportedly congratulated the wrong Malcom Brown on Twitter. "Strong accidentally tweeted at former Longhorns running back Malcolm Brown, who is also waiting for his name to be called this weekend," noted Yahoo Sports.
On his Twitter page, Strong mentioned user @MallyCat_28 instead of @MalcomBrown_90. He, however, was quick enough to correct his wrong tweet. Yahoo Sports explained that it was an honest mistake from the coach as both had exactly the same name except for one letter.
It seems the second Brown already had a feeling that the mix-up would happen. Through his Twitter account, he expressed that he's already anticipating that people will call him out once his namesake is mentioned during the draft. "Let's see how many calls, text and tweets I get tonight when my bro @MalcomBrown_90 get drafted?" Clearly, Strong became one of those people.
Game time for Brown
According to NFL.com, Brown is entering the league oozing with confidence as he claimed that he is the best player drafted by the Patriots.
"Ya'll about to get the best player ya'll have ever drafted so just be ready for when I touch the field," he said in the NFL.com report.
Boston Globe's Rachel G. Bowers described Brown as a great person with a loving family, citing multiple news sources.
"Right when I got in their life, I tried to do my best," Brown said referring to his wife and two kids.
"It just gives me more (motivation). I'm not just playing for myself anymore - I'm playing to support my family. I can't just think about myself when I make decisions. I have to think about my daughters and my wife being supportive, so I have to give it my all," he told Houston Chronicle. "I’m not just playing for myself anymore — I’m playing to support my family. I can’t just think about myself when I make decisions. I have to think about my daughters and my wife being supportive, so I have to give it my all."
During his days as a Longhorn, Brown was able to play 39 games for three seasons, as per Boston Globe. In 2014, he was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski and Outland trophies in 2014 and was also a consensus first team All-American.
Aside from these achievements, below are some notable records of Brown, as reported by Boston Globe:
■ Last season, he was the first Texas defensive tackle to lead the Longhorns in tackles for loss and sacks since Tony Degrate in 1984.
■ Texas defensive coordinator Vance Bedford called him the best player in the Big 12 last season.
■ Brown's best career game at Texas came against BYU, despite it being a 41-7 Longhorns' loss. He recorded 10 tackles, four for loss, 2.5 sacks, and forced a fumble.
It remains to be seen whether Brown's addition to the the Patriots will really help the team become more competitive and stronger.
