The sixth-generation iPod touch has long been the subject of countless rumors traversing the internet grapevine. For those who may not know, the most recent of the product line was launched back in 2012. Since then, speculations as to how the next iteration may differentiate itself from its predecessors went on.

At this point, while Apple appears to set its eyes on the newly-available Apple Watch, rumors have it that the new iPod touch will be unveiled in September. Crossmap wrote, "It is rumored that the release date for the iPod Touch 6th Generation will be this coming September according to an insider."

Looking at the calendar, we're about four months away from affirming or disproving such claim.

In 2014, the Cupertino giant took the wraps off the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus by September, while the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 eventually launched the following month. Apparently, it shows that Tim Cook and company are making headlines at this time of the year -- but for the new iPod touch, we'll have to wait and see.

According to the Master Herald, the new iPod touch is expected to arrive with the new iPhone by September, though it's hard to tell whether we're bound to see the alleged iPhone 6s or iPhone 7. Again, Apple has not confirmed details about these devices, but renowned tipster Ming Chi-Kuo of KGI Securities predicted that the company will head straight to the latter.

Citing information from the Venture Capital Post, the Master Herald wrote that Apple is making sure, however, that the sixth-generation iPod touch shall be "fully-loaded with features and state-of-the-art technology." The device is touted to pack Siri features, Apple Pay, Touch ID and interestingly, water-resistant ability.

In terms of display, the new iPod touch is reportedly sporting a 4-inch screen, BREATHEcast cited. Under the hood, it's purported to house either an A7 or A8 SoC processor. The outlet added that it's allegedly packing a "superior camera sensor," though it did not cite further details such as megapixel count, among others.

Day Herald also noted speculations, which claim that the device will be offered in 32 GB and 64 GB internal storage options. We get an 8 MP rear camera rumor this time, including expected colors such as space grey, pink, silver or red.

In addition to these colors, Master Herald cited blue and yellow, which gives us a total of six expected colors. The outlet went on to indicate that the device is said to have 1 GB of RAM, including a micro SD card that supports up to 128 GB of storage.

The new iPod touch is expected to arrive in two variants: one measuring 4.7 inches and another at 5.5 inches, the Venture Capital Post said. The source cited iOS 9 as the device's operating system.

With regards to pricing, Day Herald mentioned that the media player is rumored to range from $250 to $300. With no official word from Apple, these details are still best taken with healthy pinches of salt.

According to BREATHEcast, Apple reported iPod sales for the last time in the Q4 of fiscal 2014, with the outlet citing "somewhat over 2.6 million units."

What do you expect to see in the new iPod touch? Is the device still relevant? Sound off in the comments section.
