There's something new with Instagram and it's all about music. On Wednesday, the online mobile photo-sharing and social networking service announced the launch of @music, an official community dedicated to music and musicians.

TechCrunch said this is the first time Instagram has created an account dedicated to a subject only. In an announcement, Instagram founder and CEO Kevin Systrom said that they came up with this initiative since they consider the music community as an important part of the social networking site.

"For the past four years, we have become the home for artists big and small -- a place where people across the musical spectrum come to share stories, reveal their creativity and connect directly with fans," Systrom noted.

He added that that new account will allow Instagram users to explore music around the world from people who also create it for the community.

"Each week, we'll take a look at the musical experience on Instagram. That means showing you a different side of artists you know and love, like Questlove (@questlove), and introducing you to up-and-coming talents from around the world, like Tricot (@ikkyu193). It means highlighting music photographers, album illustrators, instrument makers and, of course, fans. In the Instagram tradition, we will also welcome community participation with a new, music-themed monthly hashtag project," the company co-founder and CEO explained.

Systrom wrote that music has always been a big part of the lives of Instagram users. "It's a passion of ours, and we know it's a passion of yours. So follow along at @music -- we think you'll discover something new," he urged users.

According to TechCrunch, one-quarter of the most popular accounts of the mobile app are those of musicians.

Billboard explained that more than 25 percent of the top accounts are musicians with singer Beyonce on top having 30.9 million followers followed by Ariana Grande (30.1 million), Taylor Swift (28.3 million), Justin Bieber (26 million), Miley Cyrus (18.3 million) and Rihanna and Katy Perry (who each have 17.7 million each.)

With the new official community, Billboard said that it can help emerging artists. "In the coming weeks, @music will host 11 series and six posts a week from Tuesday to Sunday spanning the globe of music, with U.S.-based Questlove among the first to be featured," Billboard wrote.

Facebook and Instagram strategic partnerships/music head Jonathan Hull and Instagram music editor Alex Suskind will reportedly oversee the content of @music.

Hull added that one of their goals is to facilitate artist discovery. "We know these artists are creating companions to their live show, as an extension of their creativity, so how do we make sure more people are seeing that?" the music head said, as quoted by Billboard.
