Rumors about Daniel Brühl's involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have long been going around. In a recent interview, the Spanish-German actor finally confirmed that he is set to portray Baron Helmut Zemo in the Chris Evans-starrer "Captain America: Civil War."
"I think I can tell you that without being thrown into Marvel prison..." Brühl told The Independent, adding that he will start shooting for the superhero film at the end of April. "For the first few days I'll walk around like a little boy, just amazed by the megalomania of it. It's such a huge project. We could do 20 films with the budget."
For those unacquainted with the character, Baron Zemo is one of Captain America's most prominent foes for 42 years, Entertainment Weekly wrote. Baron Zemo, the son of a HYDRA scientist, vowed to exact revenge for his father's death but "ended up spiraling down into a vat of the impossible-to-break bonding substance Adhesive X-which disfigured him permanently," the news outlet added.
Defaced by a purple hood permanently attached to his face, the character was the mastermind behind the Masters of Evil, a super villain group in opposition to The Avengers.
Brühl, 36, is best known for his role in "Rush" as the Formula 1 champion Niki Lauda and as the Nazi sniper Fredrick Zoller in "ss," Entertainment Weekly noted. Along with Evans, Brühl will also star alongside Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man) in "Captain America: Civil War," which is slated for release on May 6, 2016, IGN reported.
Other stars confirmed to portray roles in the film are Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier), and Chadwick Boseman's debut appearance as T'Challa/Black Panther, IGN listed.
Elizabeth Olsen also confirmed that she will reprise her character as Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff in the movie installment. The actress told E! Online that she will be filming scenes in Atlanta, Georgia for two weeks.
"Captain America: Civil War" will pit Steve Rogers against Tony Stark because of their opposing ideologies. When asked about this wedge driving the two superheroes apart, Downey said that jealousy also has a large part to play in the impending conflict.
"On the surface it's that," the actor told IGN in an interview. "But also [Tony] Stark grew up under the shadow of this very close father son/relationship that Howard [Stark] had with Steve [Rogers, Captain America] so I'm sure that it's driven by some unconscious motives. At the same time, they're two vastly different generations of moral psychology. And arguably, Cap's is more righteous. But I think Tony is a realist. So that's always a fun dynamic to play."
Evans, who also acknowledged the differences between the two characters, said that the third "Captain America" film will be effective because "there's a flip-flop" in the way MCU handled things, IGN noted.
