WNBA players and couple Brittney Griner of Phoenix Mercury and Glory Johnson of Tulsa Shock were arrested on Wednesday for assault and disorderly conduct.

According to Sports Illustrated, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the two were taken into custody and booked at the Maricopa County Jail but were later released.

The report added that 2013 No. 1 pick, Griner, had a physical fight with her fiancee, Johnson, on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a 911 call from one of their companions. Authorities said they found the couple both with minor injuries after the incident.

Griner's lawyer said in an ESPN report that the couple have been extremely stressed for the last few months especially with all the preparations for their wedding next month.

"They will continue to work through these hardships together and ask that the media respect their privacy as they handle this family matter. Glory and Brittney sincerely apologize for the distraction this has caused their families, respective teams, the WNBA, sponsors, and fans," David Michael Cantor said in a statement.

The ESPN report also noted that Griner's statement to the police revealed that she and Johnson had been arguing every day and that they finally clashed on Wednesday in their newly-bought residence. Johnson reportedly claimed that Griner disrespected her prompting the former to push her. Griner retaliated by pushing Johnson at the back of her head.

"Glory Johnson turned around and the physical altercation began, with both fighting on the floor for 4 to 6 minutes. The entire episode lasted about 20 minutes," ESPN said, quoting the police report on the incident.

It added that Johnson had a cut on her lip while Griner had a laceration on her right wrist and a tooth mark on the middle finger of her right hand. A friend, Julio Trejo, also had a cut on his neck when he tried to stop the two from fighting.

The Phoenix Mercury star told the police that their physical fight was "caused by weeks of stress, including buying a house, planning a wedding, and their relationship." An ESPN source added that the couple has been attending counseling in preparation for their wedding. They were engaged last August after Griner proposed to Johnson.

Asked about the comments of both teams, WNBA spokesperson Dina Skokos said in the ESPN report that they are still contacting the players to get more information.

In a statement, Tulsa Shock president Steve Swetoha said that their main concern is Johnson's well-being and health.

Phoenix Mercury has yet to release a statement on Griner's involvement. The player helped Mercury win their third WNBA championship last September. Sports Illustrated said she averaged 15.6 points, 8 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game in the previous season and is on her way to her second All-Star game.
