J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan" is a beloved children's classic, which means that it's going to have a lot of adaptations over time. While Disney's animation reminds children of what it takes to fly (happy thoughts and pixie dust), there are other adaptations that explore different facets of JM Barrie's world, one of which included a Johnny Depp film titled "Finding Neverland" and of course, Pan's character adaptation seen on ABC's hit series, "Once Upon a Time."
This year's tale shows another version of the boy who never wanted to grow up. According to Variety, the latest adaptation, penned by Jason Fuchs, gives a new twist to the classic tale, it's IMDB synopsis reading, "The story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny -- to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan."
The film, which stars Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, Kate Mara as Tiger Lily, and Levi Miller as Peter Pan, was set to open on July 24, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros decided to push it for a later release date --- on October 9.
While this usually means that there were problems encountered that warranted a delay in the production, domestic distribution head for the company, Dan Fellman, said that their decision is based on the scheduling of their summer season. In a statement, he said, "We wanted to give Pan the space to extend its theatrical run, so taking it out of the cluttered summer season made the most sense. Moving the film to the heart of the fall will allow us more time to screen the picture, enabling us to capitalize on what we anticipate will be strong word of mouth."
Warner Bros has the most movies opening up this summer among which included "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "San Andreas" for May, "Entourage" and "Max" for June, "Magic Mike XL", "The Gallows", and "Vacation" for July, and "Man from UNCLE" and "Me Before You" in August, THR listed.
While their summer season is well-cluttered, there is perhaps also another reason why the company is unwilling to release "Pan" too soon: it will come face to face with Fox's "Paper Towns" starring Cara Delevigne (who also appears in "Pan" as a mermaid) on its original air date, and will have to compete with Marvel's "Ant-Man" and Universal's "Trainwreck" with Judd Apatow, which are both opening the weekend before, THR added.
However, as director Joe Wright explained, "As you might expect, the fantastical story of Peter Pan involves very complex effects and I did not want to compromise on quality in finishing the film. This allows me and my team the time to complete the movie and tell the story the way it should be told."
