Kobe Bryant fully participated in the Los Angeles Lakers' scrimmage on Tuesday and the superstar guard reportedly had a good day of practice, but it remains up in the air as to whether or not the former NBA MVP will return from injury this week.
Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni told ESPN Los Angeles that Bryant, who has been on the sidelines since tearing the Achilles tendon in his left leg in April, scrimmaged with the team for 30 to 45 minutes.
D'Antoni added that the 35-year-old superstar took a "big step forward" towards his much-awaited return, saying that Bryant was able to do "everything" that he needs to do to perform well in an actual game. However, the veteran coach remains unsure whether or not Bryant will play against the Sacramento Kings on Friday.
"Today was a good day. We'll see tomorrow how he reacts and everything, but today was a big step forward," D'Antoni said after Tuesday's practice. "We don't want to jump the gun. We don't know. We'll see if he's able, but like I said, today, it all looks good."
Meanwhile, while Bryant looked ready to make his 2013-14 NBA season debut on Friday against the Kings, injured point guard Steve Nash remains highly questionable for their next game.
Nash, who also practiced for the first time since being ruled out almost four weeks ago due to nerve irritation in his back and hamstring, said that he is feeling better after a week of rehabilitation in Vancouver, but the two-time MVP admitted that he is very doubtful for Friday's game.
"I don't know if it's out of the realm, but it's probably very unlikely and very doubtful," Nash said.
The 39-year-old veteran point guard said that other factors outside of his performance in their upcoming practices will also be considered before setting a timetable for his return.
"I think right now, regardless of how well I practice this week, there's still some other objective and subjective tests to make sure this is sustainable and it's not something that's still as tenuous as it's been recently when you feel good enough to go out and play, you play and it just deteriorates," said Nash, who averaged 6.7 points and 4.8 assists in his first six games this season.
