Warner Bros. has unveiled its official release dates for its upcoming "LEGO" movies roster.
According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, the still untitled spin-off LEGO Batman film will be unveiled in theaters on February 10, 2017, with "Ninjago" slated to premiere on Sept. 22, 2017 after a delay on its supposedly fall 2016 opening due to its "under construction" status. "The LEGO Movie Sequel," on the other hand, will open on May 18, 2018.
"We are very excited about dating our upcoming LEGO animated features, which already have a worldwide fan following, built on the foundation of the first film," said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. President of Domestic Distribution, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly. "These three films already in the pipeline are just the beginning of a creative and diverse animation slate that will be delighting audiences for years to come."
With this new lineup, the only competition for the LEGO Batman movie's February 2017 release date is Fox's romantic drama "The Mountain Between Us" starring Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike, The Hollywood Reporter wrote. The other two dates are not competing against other films at the moment.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, last year's highly successful "The LEGO Movie" grossed $468.7 million worldwide, The Hollywood Reporter noted. The animated flick also bagged Grammy and Oscar nominations for its song titled "Everything is Awesome," Entertainment Weekly added.
"It's truly amazing to see how the big screen lends another dimension to the rich Lego world, and offers new ways for fans to be engaged and entertained by these characters," LEGO Vice President of Licensing and Entertainment Jill Wilfert said, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
For the LEGO Batman film, IGN reported that Will Arnett will reprise his role as the voice behind the Dark Knight. Co-director Lord said that the spin-off "will explore Batman's emotions, and have him trying to find happiness," the news outlet added. Chris McKay will direct the spin-off from a script penned by Seth Grahame-Smith.
'The LEGO Movie' Sequel Gets Comedy Series Director
Last February, a separate report from IGN wrote that "Community" director Rob Schrab will direct the follow-up for "The LEGO Movie," which also serves as Schrab's first feature project. He also directed episodes for other comedy shows such as "Parks and Recreation" and "The Mindy Project."
Lord and Miller are returning to write for the sequel's film, which, according to IGN, is set four years after the events of the original flick. Vocal talents from the first "LEGO Movie" are also expected to reprise their roles, which includes Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Ferrell, Nick Offerman, and Charlie Day, Cinema Blend noted.
