Rita Wilson recently disclosed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The "Sleepless in Seattle" actress, who is also wife to actor Tom Hanks, said in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE that she is grateful for the presence of her family, loved ones, and her doctor upon knowing her diagnosis, adding that she feels "blessed" for the outpouring of love and support.
"I have taken a leave from the play 'Fish in the Dark' to deal with a personal health issue," said Wilson, who is set to return to the Broadway play on May 5, PEOPLE reported. "Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma. I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion."
The 58-year-old actress continued, "I have had an underlying condition of LCIS, (lobular carcinoma in situ) which has been vigilantly monitored through yearly mammograms and breast MRIs. Recently, after two surgical breast biopsies, PLCIS (pleomorphic carcinoma in situ) was discovered. I mention this because there is much unknown about PLCIS and it is often found alongside DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ). I was relieved when the pathology showed no cancer."
According to Wilson, she's glad that she was one of the beneficiaries of the advances in cancer treatment, particularly in breast cancer and reconstruction, the news outlet wrote. The actress also insisted that she is getting better every day and that she looks forward to restoring her good health.
Further talking about her condition, Wilson shared that early diagnosis for cancer goes a long way. A friend of hers, who also had breast cancer, advised Wilson to get a second opinion on her pathology. She quickly took the advice, describing her additional consultation as a gut feeling, PEOPLE noted.
"A different pathologist found invasive lobular carcinoma," Wilson explained to the news outlet. "His diagnosis of cancer was confirmed by, yet, another pathologist. I share this to educate others that a second opinion is critical to your health. You have nothing to lose if both opinions match up for the good, and everything to gain if something that was missed is found, which does happen. Early diagnosis is key."
Celebrities Express Support for Rita Wilson
Wilson's cancer diagnosis has gained support from celebrities, who all took to their respective social media accounts to wish the actress well. Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb send their love to Wilson during a recent airing of the "Today" show, E! News reported.
John Stamos called Wilson a "hero," while LeAnn Rimes Cibrian tweeted about sending prayers for the actress. Other celebrities who hoped for Wilson's recovery are movie star Christina Applegate, TV host and anchor Katie Couric, singers Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban, and Maria Shriver, E! News noted.
