In the last installment of Dreamworks' "How To Train Your Dragon," Hiccup was all grown up and in a relationship. He found out that his mother is alive and is a dragon rider like him. There are other tribes that hunt dragons, that dragons have their own politics, and... his father, Stoick, died.

Yes, even the fans mourned.

However, a third film is coming up and so far, besides the fact that Stoick won't be there anymore, here are some things that we know about the upcoming sequel as noted by The Collider:

  •  The screenplay is to be written by Dean DeBlois, who also happens to be the director of the film.
  •  It's going to complete Hiccup's coming of age story - and with that, it also means that it will be the end of the films, as "How To Train Your Dragon" was planned as a trilogy. In a previous report, DeBlois already closed the window of a fourth film, but he insisted that while they won't have a fourth movie, spinoffs are still possible.
  •  It will delve deeper into the story of the dragons, mostly on Toothless, He told Collider, "I'm also playing with the idea of what happened to the dragons and why they are no more, as suggested by Cressida Cowell's books. So the whole mystery of where did they go? Did they come back? What transpired? I think it's all compelling stuff and it's definitely a story that's gonna have a lot more Toothless emphasis in it. We continue to get more insight into the dragon world and shed light on their intelligence and all the aspects that we've been slowly cooking over the last two films."
  •  The film will be released on June 9, 2017. The release date was moved, according to DeBlois, because these movies usually take around three years to make, and he knew even then that the original 2016 announcement was a tad too ambitious. There's no drama. As he said, "it's just a process of building models and doing tests and animating, storyboarding, the whole thing just adds up to about three years."
  •  If you remember the first line in the first film, Hiccup said, "There were dragons when I was a boy... You'll have to take my word for it." In a previous report by Screen Rant, "How To Train Your Dragon 3" could have the same arc as "Toy Story 3" as it will address how and why dragons disappeared, probably ending with a much-older Hiccup telling his story to the younger ones in his tribe.

While we're waiting for more details for "How To Train Your Dragon 3," however, the third season of the animated series (airing on Netflix) is coming in June, and according to Rotoscopers, it's going to be called "Race to the Edge."
