Ever since "The Vampire Diaries" premiered in 2009, Nina Dobrev had been playing the lead role of Elena Gilbert and her doppelgangers, Katherine Pierce, Tatia, and Amara.
However, six years is a long time to play a single character and it seems that Nina is ready to leave TVD behind, as she confirmed via her Instagram account on Monday. In a heartfelt letter, she said, "I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years, I got the journey of a lifetime."
According to Entertainment Tonight, the show is still coming back for another season, so it's not yet clear whether Nina's character will die, as she had multiple times, or if she will just leave Mystic Falls the way her brother Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) did.
But with Nina gone, the TVD team will have to find a replacement for her as a lead character. Fans are not happy about this idea as many of them seemed to think that nobody can replace the actress on the series.
Here are some reactions:
@IrunWithWolves: And lest we never forget the mess that was left post-Michael Scott on the Office. #tvd #ninawewillmissyou
@whitneykay19: There is no Vampire Diaries withou Elena.
@msLas: NINA DOBREV IS LEAVING THE VAMPIRE DIARIES. NOW I KNOW HOW THE DIRECTIONERS FELT. #zayn #ninawewillmissyou #betrayal #imalmost30
@mayou106: #ninawewillmissyou NO !!! it's impossible *crying* delena has to be endgame @julieplec @ninadobrev
@SivanFrantastic: This has to be some sort of joke!? Nina cannot leave The Vampire Diaries. I won't watch it if she does she makes the show #ninawewillmissyou
Considering that Elena's role is central to to the show, the rest of the gang may not have to go on without her until Season 7, although it may be the end of the show. As MTV pointed out, in television history, when the character that holds the group together leaves, there is little for the show to go on unlike when Brenda left "90210" and Diane bid farewell to "Cheers." The same can be said about Marissa's exit from "The OC" and even John Ritter's passing in "8 Simple Rules."
But with Nina adamant on leaving the show even after co-star and ex-boyfriend Ian Somerhalder asked her to stay (reports from Hollywood Life said he practically begged her to), how do you think the series will play out with her leaving the show?
