David Archuleta has issued a public apology following a seemingly anti-gay statement he posted on Twitter a few days ago.
The former "American Idol" contestant has sparked controversy when he tweeted a controversial message on April 4 after attending a biannual conference last weekend which featured Boyd K. Packer, President of the Quarum of the Twelve Disciples, Billboard reported.
Quoting the Mormon Church leader, he posted: "Romantic love is incomplete. It is a prelude. Love is nourished by the coming of children, who spring from the fountain of love...expressed between a man and a woman in marriage. #PresPacker."
Packer, who has been married for 70 years, also tackled the challenges facing marriages nowadays during the conference, particularly financial stress, temptation, and illness, Billboard wrote.
Archuleta later issued an apology statement on his official site after the tweet (now deleted) caused outrage among his followers who thought that the message was anti-gay.
"I apologize if I have offended anyone with the quote I sent out Saturday," the 24-year-old singer wrote. "I guess I didn't think about the line 'expressed between a man and a woman in marriage' being stressed when the whole quote didn't fit in just 1 tweet. I am sorry my intentions were misunderstood, as my main focus was that too often romance is looked at as the end-all when there is so much more."
He continued, "The bonds that can be there within a family and raising kids, as that is the most valuable thing I have: my family. I do hope however, that whoever may have been offended may know I respect everyone's freedom to believe and live as they choose. I hope others can respect what I value most in my life as well. Again, I'm sorry and please forgive me if I offended you. David."
The "Something 'Bout Love" singer is an outspoken member of the Mormon Church and is a part of the group The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Billboard noted. Back in March 2014, Archuleta went on a two-year Mormon mission in Chile, E! News reported.
David Archuleta Rumored to be Gay?
This wasn't the first time that Archuleta was involved in the gay community. Back in 2010, the singer was rumored to be gay when he was spotted partying at a men-who-love-men venue called Club 57, The David Chronicles reported. The crooner, however, shut down the claims and insisted that he was only at the club to watch his friend perform, fellow singer Charice.
Charice, who in 2013 came out publicly as a lesbian, was the only rumored girlfriend of Archuleta, Wet Paint wrote. Speculations about their dating status, all of which were denied by the Filipina singer, surfaced when the pair was spotted every so often in 2010. In the same year, the two did a duet of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" for Archuleta's album.
