Already breaking sales records in the United States and the United Kingdom, Sony's PlayStation 4 seems intent to repeat its early success across the globe. The PS4 has now sold over 2.1 million units worldwide less than a month after it was released on Nov. 15.

Andrew House, the head of Sony Computer Entertainment, spoke to IGN about the milestone, thanking PlayStation 4 fans for making the achievement possible.

"It's an impressive and record-setting accomplishment for our company and for our industry, and we couldn't have done it without you. I want to personally thank PlayStation fans, both old and new, for your vote of confidence," House told IGN. "The best part: the PS4 journey has just begun. In addition to an incredible lineup of PS4 games from the best developers in the world, we will continue to introduce valuable new features and services to PS4 in the months and years ahead."

House added that he and the rest of the team at Sony are still working hard to improve the PlayStation 4 and to ensure that the console is the best video game platform available now and in the future:

"While PS4's capabilities will continue to evolve, our commitment to gamers and breakthrough entertainment remains steadfast. We believe that video games represent the pinnacle of artistry and entertainment, and we will work tirelessly to make sure that PlayStation remains the best place to play. Thank you for your passion and your support - we couldn't have done this without you."

With this milestone, Sony is well on its way to reaching its goal of selling 3 million PlayStation 4 consoles by the end of 2013 and 5 million by the end of the financial year in March 2014. As the console continues to launch in new regions, and the holiday shopping season drives demand, it looks like the PlayStation 4 is a lock to surpass 3 million sold before the end of the year.

The PlayStation 4 set a record when it was launched in North America, selling 1 million units in just 48 hours. When the machine launched in Europe and the United Kingdom, the console became the fastest ever to reach 250,000 units sold, beating the Xbox One's sales during that time period as well.
