When ABC Family's groundbreaking series "The Fosters" returns this January, there will be a new character and tons of new drama.
The series, which is produced by Jennifer Lopez, centers around a lesbian couple and their biological, adopted and foster children, Entertainment Weekly reports.
A tagline for the show, "How do you define family?" hints at the show's main theme, which concerns finding familial love and togetherness even though people are not biologically related.
When the series returns in 2014, it will pick up with Callie (Maia Mitchell), the foster child, running away after the Fosters offer to adopt her. She runs away after kissing her foster brother, Brandon (David Lambert).
"She left because I kissed her," Brandon confesses to his mothers, who are newly wed.
A preview of the upcoming season shows Brandon explaining why Callie ran away. It also features Callie in a detention center, as well as Jesus (Jake T. Austin) confessing his love to Lexi, his girlfriend and the best friend of his twin sister, Mariana (Cierra Ramirez).
Mariana will also wonder if Stef (Teri Polo) and Lena (Sherri Saum) will question her adoption once they find out that she's been in contact with her birth mother, who is a drug addict.
There will also be a new character in the second half of season one.
"The Practice" alum Maria Sokoloff will appear as the sober partner to Stef's recovering alcoholic ex-husband, Mike (Danny Nucci).
Her character, "Hurricane Dani," will have a strong personality who acts first and thinks afterwards.
Sokoloff, who has also appeared on "Melissa & Joey," "Desperate Housewives" and "CSI: NY" will make her debut in the Feb. 17 episode.
Watch the promo below for season 1B, which premieres on Jan. 13 at 9 p.m. EST on ABC Family.
