Rockstar Games may want to lawyer-up. It appears as though one of the tabloids' favorite movie stars will sue one of the video game industry's most popular franchises, claiming her image was used without permission.
Lindsay Lohan is planning to sue the makers of Grand Theft Auto 5, Rockstar Games, claiming that her image is used in the game without her consent, according to TMZ. The actress will reportedly call her lawyer to demand that developer Rockstar Games and publisher Take-Two give her some "serious money" over the issue. Neither company has responded to these alleged claims.
While there aren't any specific instances of Lohan appearing in the game, several possible scenarios have emerged where it is possible to believe Rockstar based a character or detail on Lohan. One is the familiar blonde woman in a swimsuit that is one the cover of the game. Many fans had assumed that the woman was based on Kate Upton, but it is possible that Lohan could think that the woman is based on herself instead. There is also a mission in the game where the character must escort a vaguely Lohan-like actress to her home so that she can avoid the paparazzi hounding her. The game also features a building that resembles the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, where Lohan frequently stays and actually lived in at one point.
Do any of these items equal Rockstar ripping off Lohan's appearance or life without her permission? It is hard to tell, but this lawsuit seems more frivolous than serious. After all, many other pop-culture figures and items appear in the game, but have not drawn the ire of those targeted. For example, one mission in the game leads players to break into the offices of Life Invader, a mock social media website similar to Facebook. At the end of the mission, the CEO of the company brags about making money off people's personal information — an obvious jab at Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg — before a bomb goes off in the character's phone and kills him. If Rockstar is able to get away with that, then it is unlikely that Lohan will be able to successfully sue the company.
Of course, considering the news comes from TMZ, and no official legal proceedings have occurred yet, take all of this with a tremendous grain of salt for the time being. Look out for more developments on Lohan's alleged lawsuit and Grand Theft Auto 5 news right here.
