With its draw against Australia last week, Japan became the first team to qualify for the World Cup 2014. However, the team has no intention of taking its latest game against Iraq on Tuesday lightly.
Back 1993, Iraq drew 2-2 with Japan and denied the Samurais a chance to qualify for the 1994 World Cup finals.
"In Japanese football history, this is a place we can't ever forget," Japanese midfielder Shinji told Kyodo News. "But we are taking the necessary steps to move on toward the future."
The team might have to pull off its victory without Keisuke Honda, the hero from the team's last match against Australia. In that game, Honda scored a late penalty goal that clinched Japan's World Cup berth.
"He hasn't played a whole lot recently so he is in need of some fine-tuning," Manager Alberto Zaccheroni said. "Whatever playing time he can give me, I need to use it wisely. I don't think we've played as poorly as some say without Honda. Honda is an important player to us, but we do have people who can step up and fill in."
Iraq is currently in last place in the group with five points in six games. A loss on Tuesday would eliminate the team from being able to qualify directly for the World Cup. Instead, the Iraqis would have to win their final match and pray for a number of different outcomes to have any chance. The team would need Australia and Jordan to draw on Tuesday. Then Iraq would need to defeat and hope that Oman wins against Jordan.
"This is the last chance for Iraq to qualify for the World Cup and we will give it whatever we have," Iraq coach Vladimir Petrovic said.
Prediction: Japan pulls off a 4-0 win.
