He may have swarms of fans, but the truth is that NBC's "Hannibal" has been struggling with ratings, despite its critical acclaim. Those who do watch the show regiously need not worry, though.
Hannibal Lecter is back, and scarier than ever considering that for the first episode of the third season, he will be haunting us in four different timelines.
Showrunner Bryan Fuller definitely seemed excited about the return of the series as he took to Twitter to post a few updates, one of them reads, "THE #HANNIBAL SEASON 3 OPENER TAKES PLACE OVER FOUR DIFFERENT PERIODS OF TIME."
According to the "Hannibal" page on Fandango, the series will feature some time jumps, praising the fact that everything will be out of the way by the end of the first episode, to help establish the Red Dragon storyline.
There are several things that Fuller revealed regarding the series, as according to Screen Rant, he disclosed that the first three episodes of the season are named "Antipasto," "Primavera," and "Secondo," all of which will be directed by Vincenzo Natali ("Splice").
"Game of Thrones" director Neil Marshall has reportedly signed on as helmsman for the eight episode, titled "The Great Red Dragon," which is said to skip a few years in the lives of the main characters to introduce Francis Dollarhyde (Richard Armitage).
Screenrant also noted that the third season will be filled with dramatic revelations, combining elements from several of the original source novels in order to add an element of surprise to the story, for both viewers and Hannibal Lecter literature fanatics.
"Season 3 is going to be a lot of fun because it's going to be taking a lot of disparate elements from the novel Hannibal Rising and the novel Hannibal and mashing them up together as part of the thrust of the season. We're significantly changing the Hannibal origin story from Hannibal Rising," Fuller said about the show in an interview with TV Guide.
The synopsis for episode 1 - "Antipasto" reads:
"The dark and haunting series "Hannibal" returns for a third season, revealing the fates of characters hanging in the balance and their continuing psychological cat-and-mouse games.
"After the shocking events of the season finale, Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) is on the run in Europe - accompanied by his psychiatrist Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) - sporting a new identity but servicing the same insatiable appetite. As the lives of Will (Hugh Dancy), Jack (Laurence Fishburne) and Alana (Caroline Dhavernas) converge toward Hannibal again, their deadly dance turns in startling and unexpected ways, and nothing will ever be the same again."
Hannibal returns on June 4 on NBC.
