James Cameron's "Avatar" was a record breaking hit when it came to the silver screen in 2009, and despite the number of hit blockbusters that came after - including "The Avengers," "The Dark Knight Rises," and even "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," Cinema Blend noted that nothing came close to the $2.782 billion that "Avatar" grossed.
However, with news of "Avatar 2" in the works, it's bound to be one to watch. Unfortunately, because it is still a long way off, there is still very little that we actually know about it.
Here are the things that we do know:
1) James Cameron is still directing, and because the first film is truly a passion project for the filmmaker, he is also set on doing not just the second "Avatar" film, but the third and fourth as well.
2) There are big plans in regards to filming technology, which Cameron is set on using, and he means filming at higher frame rates and even using capture underwater performances, ensuring that "Avatar 2" will push boundaries as far as filming and effects go.
3) The script will be written by a team of writers, as opposed to Cameron's solitary credit from the original "Avatar." Among those who are writing the script include Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Shane Salerno (Armageddon).
4) Jake Sully and Neytiri will be back, as both Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana has confirmed that they are reprising their roles. Saldana even admitted that she already knows a little about what's going on with the film, saying that she and Cameron got very emotional discussing the story.
5) Sigourney Weaver is also returning for the second installment, despite the fact that she seemed to have died in the original film. She said to Screen Rant, "Don't worry, I will be back. [James Cameron] says no one ever dies in science fiction. He's told me the stories for the next two movies and I have to say that they're absolutely wonderful and there's a real treat in store. Now we just have to make them."
According to Mirror UK, "Avatar 2" is now officially in its pre-production stages, with the script, settings, creatures, and characters being created. The wait will not be that much longer either, considering that the film is set to be released by December 2016, so it gives Cameron a little over 21 months to finish the film and ensure that it will be as much (or even much bigger) of a success as its predecessor.
