Just days after his very public feud with Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana over their "synthetic babies" comment, Sir Elton John seems ready to retract his call for boycott as he declared his love for the brand.
During his concert at the Colosseum, the singer included the fashion designers in the list of inspirational people who helped change the world, alongside Nelson Mandela and Lady Diana, as noted by TMZ.
Nobody can figure out if he was being sincere or sarcastic, but when the audience responded with laughter, he went on to add, "Listen, the band have been wearing Dolce & Gabbana, I love Dolce & Gabbana clothes."
There is no way to tell how sincere the singer is of the declaration.
The feud started when the singer heard of Dolce's opposition to gay adoption and IVF. Elton, who is married to David Furnish, wrote, "'How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic'", inspiring many others to create the #boycottdolcegabbana hashtag on Twitter and Instagram.
He also added, "And shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF - a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children.Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana."
In defense for his brand, Stefano Gabbana reportedly called the Elton "fascist" and "ignorant" after the singer's call for boycott. According to Mirror UK, Gabbana spoke to Italian daily newspaper Corriere Della Sera, saying, "I didn't expect this. I didn't expect this, coming from someone whom I considered, and I stress 'considered,' an intelligent person like Elton John."
He continued, "I mean, you preach understanding, tolerance and then you attack others? Only because someone has a different opinion? Is this a democratic or enlightened way of thinking? This is ignorance, because he ignores the fact that others might have a different opinion and that theirs is as worthy of respect as his. It's an authoritarian way of seeing the world - agree with me or, if you don't, I'll attack you. I even posted the word 'Fascist!' on his Instagram."
Ironically, the next day, Elton was photographed with a Dolce & Gabbana shopping bag in hand. According to the Daily Mail, his spokesperson confirmed that he was carrying the bag, but insisted that the boycott is still ongoing. "Yes he was carrying the bag but he hadn't been shopping. And it should not detract from their original message or the boycott."
Do you think Elton John is finally over the Dolce & Gabbana boycott, or was he being sarcastic when he said they were among the people who changed the world?
