The Dallas Cowboys have recently signed defensive end Greg Hardy to a one-year deal worth $11.3 million, reports revealed.
According to ESPN, though Hardy could be suspended for his violation of the NFL's domestic conduct policy, the Cowboys still agreed to the terms of his contract on Wednesday. The report said the team has also confirmed the deal on social media.
It has been reported that the former Carolina Panthers defensive end has been negotiating with the Cowboys for some time already with him staying in Dallas for a night prior to his scheduled physical on Wednesday morning.
In a statement, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that they spent "a great deal of time" in meeting and discussing with Hardy his situation, referring to the domestic violence issue.
"Obviously, a great deal of our study was dedicated to the issue of domestic violence and the recent events that associated Greg with that issue. We know that Greg's status remains under review by the National Football League," Jones was quoted as saying.
The Cowboys owner also said that they are serious about the nature of domestic violence in the society and in the league.
"We know that Greg has a firm understanding of those issues as well," he added.
Last year, Hardy was found guilty of assaulting his former girlfriend and threatening to kill her. Charlotte Observer said the NFL player was sentenced to a 60-day suspended sentence and 18 months' probation on misdemeanor charges.
Accoring to a separate ESPN report, the accuser testified that Hardy assaulted her after a night of drinking. She also claimed that there was a threat to her life as the NFL player placed his hands around her neck.
"He looked me in my eyes and he told me he was going to kill me. I was so scared I wanted to die. When he loosened his grip slightly, I said just, 'Do it. Kill me,'" she said, adding that Hardy is "jealous and controlling."
"He had told me in past if I took food out of his family's mouth he was going to kill me," Hardy's former flame claimed.
To his defense, Hardy said that his accuser became angry when he refused to have sex with her and went crazy and began slamming doors. The NFL player also claimed that her bruises were self-inflicted.
A recent TMZ report, however, said that the case has already been dismissed since the accuser could not be located to testify against him.
Perhaps, this is also what the Cowboys considered prior to signing him to the team.
